Staff
Community’s teachers are vibrant and maintain a challenging learning atmosphere all year through. They collaborate to plan the instructional program and regularly participate in profession development classes. Teachers are leaders, and are the most important part of our school.
Our support staff includes; Office Administrators, Cafeteria and Custodial Staff, Teacher’s Aides, Magnet Coordinator, Resource Specialist, School Psychologist, Speech and Language Therapist, Adapted PE Teacher, Teacher for the Physically Disabled, Enrichment Teacher, Drama, and a Librarian.
Classrooms
Community Magnet School currently has an enrollment of about 460 children. These students come to Community from all over the District. They are dropped off at school or ride one of our 10 buses.
Class size in Community’s Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade classes is 20 students; and Grades 4th and 5th average 34 students. Two or more classrooms are provided for each grade level.
All of our teachers team-teach, so your child will have experiences with all teachers on the grade level. At the end of each year the teachers at each grade level meet to create equal classes for the following year. Factors considered in class placement include balance of gender, ethnicity, language ability, academic ability, gifted/talented identification, behavior and social interactions. The principal selects which teacher is assigned to each class. Parents will be notified by mail over the summer of their child’s class placement.
Campus
Community Magnet School is located in Bel Air above UCLA. We have a 20-acre campus situated in a beautiful canyon that is quiet and away from the city noise. There are 26 classrooms and the office complex. We have a computer lab, library, art studio, auditorium and cafeteria. The kindergarten yard is separate from our 4-acre playground.

- Follow the safest route to and from your bus stop, using crosswalks and traffic signals.
- Be prepared to board the bus at the assigned pick up location 5 MINUTES BEFORE SCHEDULED BUS DEPARTURE TIME so that you will not miss the bus. Follow the drivers instructions regarding crossing the street.
- If the bus has left your stop or does not come within 15 minutes of the scheduled time, you should return home or go to a near by district school and call toll free # (800) 522-8737 or (800) LA-BUSES for instructions. Learn your route number.
AT THE BUS STOP
- Remain at least 10 feet back from the curb. Do not run towards the bus.
- Wait in line until the bus has stopped completely and the door has been opened.
RIDING INSTRUCTIONS
- While on the bus, you must remain seated, facing forward for the entire trip. Keep your feet and legs out of the center aisle. Keep all parts of your body inside bus.
- While on the bus, loud conversation is distracting to the driver and unsafe.
- You may not save seats. It is sometimes necessary for three students to use one bench seat.
LEAVING THE BUS
- You may get off the bus only at your assigned stop. If you need a different stop in the afternoon, written permission must be obtained from the school administrator and the Area Bus Supervisor.
- Remain seated until the bus comes to a complete stop and the doors open. Follow the driver’s instructions for the unloading sequence. Hold the handrail for balance and safety while walking down the steps. Stay back from the curb as the bus leaves.
- If you must cross the street, please tell the bus driver. You are to do exactly as the driver directs. Do not cross the street diagonally of behind the bus.
STUDENT BEHAVIOR ON THE BUS
THE SAFE TRANSPORTATION OF STUDENTS REQUIRES RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOR BY ALL PERSONS WHO RIDE SCHOOL BUSES. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT FOLLOW THE REGULATIONS MAY BE COUNSELED OR BENIED TRANSPORTATION. THE DISTRICT HAS DEVELOPED PROCEDURES TO INSURE SAFE TRANSPORTATION OF ALL RIDERS. THE FOLLOWING IS A SUMMARY OF THESE PROCEDURES:
- The bus driver will inform students of the bus rules and procedures to be followed.
- Violation of the bus rules will be discussed with the student by the driver, if necessary, with the Area Bus Supervision (ABS) and school administrator.
- If misconduct continues, the student shall be issued a “Notice of Safety Concern on School Bus” (citation). A copy shall be given to the school administrator for possible student counseling and parent notification. Parents may request a conference with school and transportation staff any time a student receives a citation.
- The student’s copy of this notice must be signed by the parent or guardian and returned to the driver the next day or when the student returns.
- Misconduct after the issuance of warning “citation” may result in suspension from transportation.
- If the student is suspended from the bus, he/she usually is given a one day grance period before the suspension takes effect in order to provide parents the opportunity to arrange alternative transportation.
- Riding privileges may be suspended for continued misconduct. A parent conference may be held to discuss the problem before the student may resume riding the school bus.
- If the student’s conduct endangers other passengers, District transportation for the student may be suspended.
- When a “citation” is issued in the morning, the student SHALL be provided transportation home in the afternoon. Suspension from the bus does not mean suspension from school, unless so indicated by the school administrator.
This is part of the information that is included in the brochure sent to all students in the transportation system on the “Official Notification of Your Child’s Transportation Schedule” if any additional information is needed contact the Transportation Supervisor (ABS) in charge of the school your child attends.
